HealthMinisterRebaMeagherhasurgedexpectantmumstowatchwhattheyeatfollowinganincreaseinlisteriosis,whichiscausedbycontaminatedfood.
Thisyearfourpregnantwomenhavealreadybeendiagnosedwiththediseasethatusuallyaffectsonetofourwomenannually.
Listeriosishasincreasedinthegeneralpopulation,too,with18casesreportedsinceJanuary-doublethenumberrecordedforthesameperiodlastyear.
"Nolinkshavebeenidentifiedamongthecasesandtheincreaseappearstobecoincidental,"MsMeaghersaid.
"Listeriosisduringpregnancycanleadtomiscarriage,stillbirthandinfectionofthenewborn."
JeremyMcAnulty,fromNSWHealth,said:"Signsoflisteriosisincludeflu-likesymptomssuchasfever,muscleaches,nauseaanddiarrhoeathatcansometimesleadtosepticemia,meningitisandmiscarriage."
NSWFoodAuthoritychiefscientistLisaSzabosaidpregnantwomenshouldeatonlyfreshlycookedfoodandwell-washed,freshlypreparedfruitandvegies.
